Keeping a real tree watered with a collar fitted

By West Lancashire Creations · Updated 25 October 2026

Plan the opening before you decorate

Assemble the stand and identify its fill point and water indicator, if present. Try reaching them with the watering container you actually intend to use. If a collar blocks access, choose a different cover or an approved arrangement that preserves access.

Make checking part of the routine

Follow the grower’s advice and keep the cut base submerged. A reservoir can contain some water while the cut end is already above it, so look at the actual level rather than assuming that any water is sufficient. Trees can take up different amounts from one day to the next.

Protect the surrounding area

Pour carefully, keep water away from lighting connections, and deal with spills promptly. A fabric skirt is decorative and should not be assumed to be waterproof. Check the floor and fabric for moisture when you top up.

Leave the stand accessible

Do not pack gifts tightly around a pedal, clamps or fill opening. Decorative arrangements are easier to adjust when access was considered from the start. For detailed tree preparation, follow your grower’s instructions; Cadeby Tree Trust’s care guide is linked below.
